A New Chapter
The formation of South Carolina Physician Assurance Company happened for many reasons,
but none more so than the need to offer physicians an alternative in the market
for malpractice insurance coverage in South Carolina. And, who was more in tune
with the needs of physicians than the South Carolina Medical Association, our state’s
physician organization? No other medical malpractice insurer can make that claim
with confidence. The knowledge, passion and focus existed within the SCMA to start
a subsidiary medical liability company. With instability becoming more and more
apparent, the time to enter the market as a viable solution for physicians finally
arrived. On June 1, 2008 the South Carolina Department of Insurance granted Physician
Assurance permission to begin writing insurance. As a wholly-owned subsidiary of
the South Carolina Medical Association, South Carolina Physician Assurance Company
is domiciled in South Carolina and focuses on insuring physicians who are SCMA members
as well as their physician extenders. We employ strong loss control through various
means, including event management, training, and education to ensure our competitiveness
and sustainability in the market.
